  7.             PhotoSAFE is a custom version of CPIC which has been
  8.          combined with DataSAFE.  All references to CPIC here
  9.          also refer to the PhotoSAFE viewer.

  12. QUICKSTART GUIDE: Getting Started with CPIC(TM)
  13. ----------------------------------------------------------

  15. When you start CPIC, you will see a small window in the center
  16. of the screen with a short TIP.  READ THEM!  These tips really
  17. help you, and may point out many things that you may not know.
  18.  
  19. On the left side of the CPIC screen is the Path List. This list
  20. shows the directories on your machine similar to the way the
  21. File Manager does. Click on a directory where you have graphics
  22. files and the associated files appear in the File List on the
  23. right side of the screen.

  25.   HINT: If you use CompuServe or America Online, graphics
  26.   files are probably stored in the DOWNLOAD directory under
  27.   AOL or CSERVE, whichever is appropriate.
  28.  
  29. Once files have appeared, the best thing to do is create
  30. thumbnail images so you can see a small version of each
  31. picture. Click on the CREATE button with the picture of the
  32. thumb on it (in the toolbar across the top.) CPIC immediately
  33. begins making the small thumbnail images, and should start
  34. displaying them as they are completed.

  36. If you prefer larger thumbnails, or no thumbnails at all,
  37. click repeatedly on the FILE LIST button to see the different
  38. sizes available.

  40.   HINT: Larger thumbnails take up more room on your hard-
  41.   drive, so you might want to stick with the smaller ones if
  42.   you are conserving your hard disk.

  44. It isn't necessary to wait for all the thumbnails to be
  45. created. CPIC does this quietly in the background, leaving you
  46. free to do other things -- like look at more pictures!
  47.  
  48. Double-click on any file in the list, or highlight one and
  49. click on the VIEW button. CPIC will display it on the screen.
  50. Click the left mouse button or the ESC key on your keyboard to
  51. return to the main window.

  53. CPIC offers extensive controls for changing the way a picture
  54. looks. View another image. Move your mouse to the top edge of
  55. the screen while the image is displayed. A menu bar appears
  56. with many options for manipulating the image including Zooming,
  57. Cropping, Rotating and much more. Try some of them.

  59.   Hint: If you make any changes to the image CPIC will keep
  60.   you from accidentally exiting by clicking the left mouse
  61.   button. Use the ESC key to exit and confirm that you want to
  62.   exit without saving.

  64.   Similarly, unless you save an image with the File menu, you
  65.   will not actually be changing the image on the disk.

  67. Select a few image files and select Create Picture Index from
  68. the Utilities menu.  CPIC can easily create the best image
  69. catalogs in the industry.

  71. CPIC uses "MCI Drivers" to play multimedia files.  If you get
  72. a message about MCI drivers, please read the text file called
  73. MCI.TXT (the "MCI Help Information" icon.)

  75. Check for updates to CPIC in our Photodex areas on-line as
  76. Photodex updates CPIC frequently. You can download, install
  77. and run new versions very quickly.  If you are registered, you
  78. do not have to re-enter your registration information.
